To celebrate the release of the album, book and eBook of Over The Moon: The Broadway Lullaby Project, here is a preview of the song “A Lullaby for Midnight”, performed by Vanessa Williams with music & lyrics by Rupert Holmes, illustration by Wendell Minor.

When asked why they chose to participate in the project here is what Wendell Minor and Rupert Holmes had to say:

Wendell Minor:

“My wife, Florence’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1978 and passed away shortly thereafter. Sadly, she was but one of many family members, and friends, whose lives have been impacted by the terrible disease. Florence and I both feel strongly about doing what we can to support research to find a cure, and organizations that provide support for those suffering from breast cancer.”

Rupert Holmes

I did so in remembrance of my sensitive, wise and beautiful daughter, Wendy, whom I miss every second of my life, and to whom I sang lullabies for all of her ten brief years on this earth . . . and in support of this fine project, and all the heroic breast cancer survivors who have triumphed . . . and for my beloved mother, Gwen, who also bravely fought breast cancer, and left this life as she lived it: with courage, wit, and grace.

When asked why they chose to participate in Over The Moon: The Broadway Lullaby Project, here is what Caesar Samayoa and Marcy Heisler had to say:

Caesar Samayoa:

“I’m honored to be a part of a project that brings awareness and hope for a cure to a disease that has affected my family very personally. The incredible talent featured here has filled the Broadway Lullaby Project with such light and love and I am humbled to be one of its participants. I am overjoyed that this music will bring nothing but honor to survivors, tribute to our loved ones lost and happiness and comfort to the millions who get lulled to sleep by one of these sweet sweet lullabies. Para mis familiares - nunca te olvidamos!”

Marcy Heisler

“I would like to dedicate “Over The Moon” to my cousin Kevin, who basically became my sibling when my Aunt Susan died of breast cancer at the age of forty. Kevin had to move to Chicago from Honolulu at the age of thirteen, and come live with me and my family. I remember so vividly him playing guitar to eight-year-old me at night, singing Beatles songs, but really…trying to make sense of it all. And when we grew up and Kevin had a child of his own, I knew what I wanted my gift to be. I could imagine him so clearly playing his guitar to his newborn daughter, trying to make sense of it all once more, but this time in the most beautiful of ways.

I know all too well how cancer changes families - but I also know how it is no match at all for the love and connection forged between those who deal with it on a personal level, and those whose love is simply too strong to do anything but join in the fight. I’m proud to be part of a project filled with so many of those people who give their time and talent to that fight, no matter what their art. My deepest thanks to everyone involved. Thanks also to Zina, who was a new mother herself when this song was written. The lyric is for Kevin, the music is for the beautiful Rachel, and the song is for everyone who takes the time to rock someone they love to sleep.”

May 4, 2012

Thank you Richard Egielski, for the illustration, Michael John LaChiusa, for music and lyrics, with congratulations to 2012 Tony Nominated Actress Audra McDonald, for the beautiful “How Much Love” on Over The Moon: The Broadway Lullaby Project!

“Why I chose to participate”

Audra McDonald

Of all her many roles, her favorite is that of mother to Zoe Madeline. Audra’s mother is a breast cancer survivor, and the song is dedicated to Lovette George, her best friend, who died at a young age from ovarian cancer.

Richard Egielski

“Many times I have been asked to contribute an original illustration for a book whose proceeds benefit a cause: there was Home, aid for the homeless; For Our Children, for the Pediatric AIDS Foundation; Wing of an Artist, for the American Library Association; among others. If my schedule allows it and it is a good cause, I try mybest. The Broadway Lullaby Project fit this criteria and besides, what illustrator could resist the chance to illustrate a song by John LaChiusa?”

“I have a great admiration for theater and I like theatrical music. But mostly I am happy to do what I can to fight breast cancer. My wife is a ten-year survivor of this disease; I know that it is a less hopeless diagnosis now than it was many years ago, but it is still a terrible epidemic whose cure is important to pursue.”

I chose to participate in the project because it is a good cause, because it is an important cause, because cancer has affected very deeply some of the people I hold closest in my life, because it is an honor to use the small platform my talents have given me to do something that can help make someone’s life a little better, because we are all connected somehow and the world is very large but we are actually pressed very, very close, and because all the action that matters is what you’ve done to pay it forward to someone else.

Broadway’s Brightest Stars Gather…

February 6, 2012

BROADWAY’S BRIGHTEST STARS GATHER TO CREATE “OVER THE MOON: THE BROADWAY LULLABY PROJECT”; TWO-CD SET AND CHILDREN’S BOOK TO BENEFIT BREAST CANCER CHARITIES

Over the Moon: The Broadway Lullaby Project is both a timeless benefit effort and a uniquely compelling multimedia experience. The ambitious project—which incorporates a two-CD, 26-song set; a lavishly illustrated hardcover book of 17 songs from the album; a corresponding e-book encompassing the entire collection; and a documentary film—gathers many of contemporary musical theatre’s greatest composers and vocalists, as well as illustrators, all of whom have donated their talent to deliver an emotionally affecting set of new lullabies, some written specifically for this project. The project will raise money for such respected breast cancer charities as the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Young Survival Coalition.

Over the Moon: The Broadway Lullaby Project‘s roster of world-class vocalists features some of Broadway’s most respected and popular performers, including Anastasia Barzee, Michael Cerveris, Victoria Clark, Raul Esparza, Sutton Foster, Brian D’Arcy James, Rebecca Luker, Kelli O’Hara, Donna Murphy, Anika Noni Rose and Vanessa Williams.

The stellar assortment of singers is matched by the original contributions of such esteemed composers as Rupert Holmes, Tom Kitt, Henry Krieger with Bill Russell, Bobby Lopez with Kristen Anderson Lopez, Jill Santoriello with John Patrick Shanley, Stephen Schwartz, David Shire, and Nona Hendryx with Marva Hicks and Charles Randolph-Wright.

Meanwhile, the project’s book component also features a distinctive cover illustration by fabled cartoonist/playwright Jules Feiffer, along with a foreword written by stage and screen legend Julie Andrews and her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton. Among the illustrators lending their talents are R. Gregory Christie, Richard Egielski, Betsy Lewin, Anna Louizos, Marc Simont, Neil Waldman, Tony Walton, and Paul O. Zelinsky.

The project has been documented in the form of a short film that tells the story of the Broadway Lullaby Project from conception to completion. Through interviews and rare behind-the-scenes footage, Peabody and Emmy Award-winning documentarian Barbara Rick and Out of The Blue Films, Inc. chronicle the inspiration, rehearsals, recording sessions, and artistic processes of many of Broadway’s brightest stars, world-renowned jazz musicians, and our most-loved illustrators—all united to combat breast cancer through the comfort and beauty of music and art.

Over the Moon: The Broadway Lullaby Project is the product of the passion and dedication of the album’s co-producers, Kate Dawson and Jodi Glucksman, both veterans of New York’s theatre community.

It was Dawson, a versatile singer, actor, and writer with extensive theatre experience as well as an acclaimed one-woman show to her credit, who initiated the project. When she became pregnant with her first child in 2010, Dawson’s thoughts turned to her cousin Jill, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2006 at the age of 45.

Dawson spoke to many friends about the idea, including Jodi Glucksman, a respected playwright and dramaturge who had been profoundly affected by breast cancer: When she was 14, she lost her grandmother to the disease. Her mother and mother-in-law are both survivors, and her sister-in-law is a breast cancer surgeon. Moved by the project’s philanthropic and creative goals, she signed on as co-producer.

“It’s nearly impossible to think of anyone who hasn’t been affected by this disease,” Glucksman observes. “Nearly everyone we contacted seemed to have been touched by it. So the concept really resonated with people, and seeing how people responded propelled us to get more ambitious and expand the scope of the project.”

The idea for a children’s book of illustrated lyrics seemed a natural companion to a collection of lullabies. That’s when Barbara Aronica, a lifelong friend of Glucksman’s, got involved.” Aronica is an award-winning book designer with more than three decades of experience; she is also a cancer survivor. Aronica, in turn, enlisted veteran publishing executive David Wilk, who signed on to publish the book. Together they created a dream list of illustrators and set about soliciting contributions from them.

The Broadway Lullaby Project moved to another level when Glucksman and Dawson decided that noted jazz producer Matt Pierson was the right person to oversee the recording process. “In addition to providing a chance to work with such an exciting array of distinctive vocalists, it was a chance to be involved in an important cause,” Pierson states. “My mother is a breast cancer survivor, so this was a wonderful opportunity to show my support.”

Pierson worked closely with the singers to maintain the album’s intimate focus. The resulting album marks a historic convergence of inspired music and an inspiring cause, making The Broadway Lullaby Project a one-of-a-kind classic that will speak eloquently to listeners of all ages.

“We wanted to create something that would be soothing for children but also engaging for adults,” Dawson observes. “These lullabies are about the love between parents and children, and it’s a unique way of expressing that love. So we hope that it will be something that families can enjoy together.“

Glucksman concludes: “My mother is the creator of the annual Unsung Hero Award, which honors a non-related friend who offers extraordinary support to someone undergoing treatment for breast cancer. In a way, my involvement in this project is my Unsung Hero Award for my mother, who is the most extraordinary woman I know.”
